Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 is such a fantastic year as the children transition into upper school. Their roles and responsibilities increase as they can apply for the jobs of School Ambassadors, Subject Champions and Reception Monitors and it is always such a pleasure to see the children rise to these challenges.
Our Curriculum is exciting and varied. During the Autumn term, the children take part in hands on experiments at Sandford Mill as part of their Science and D&T topics. This is always a very popular trip as it helps to cement their learning from the classroom. As part of our Greeks topic, we end the Autumn term and celebrate everything that we have learnt by dressing up as Greeks for our Greek day, where food tasting is particularly popular amongst staff and pupils! At Christmas, pupils in Year 5 take part in a carol service at Christchurch, Chelmsford where parents are able to join us to celebrate the festive season.
In the Spring term, we learn all about Japan and this is brought to life during our Japanese Day in which pupils experience drinking Green Tea in a traditional Tea Ceremony, learn about Japanese traditions and enjoy visits from members of the Japanese Society, London. Our D&T topic is Sushi making and is always a highly enjoyable yet smelly experience! Later in the Spring term, we learn all about water and research local rivers by looking at a variety of maps as well as seeing the features of a river from first hand experience.
During the Summer term we take part in a Tudor re-enactment at Kentwell Hall which helps to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the Tudor era. This is an extremely popular school trip and is definitely something to look forward to. We weave our Literacy curriculum in throughout all of our topics in order to enrich the pupil’s knowledge and understanding. Year 5 is also the time when pupils from Moulsham first have the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons at the High School.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for their continued support in their children’s learning and hope that pupils thoroughly enjoy their time spent in Year 5!
