Each year group covers four key skills in their music lessons: listening and appraising, improvising, composing and performing. Children learn about the technicalities of music too, including learning to read music and what different technical aspects are, such as dynamics, pulse and texture. Music will relate to half-termly topics as much as possible to allow pupils to explore different genres and styles of music as well as develop an appreciation for musical history. There is opportunity to learn to play different instruments across their time at MJS too, such as recorders, ukuleles and glockenspiels; and we also use two programmes created by Essex Music Hub to enhance musical learning: Charanga and O-Generator. Some of the lesson activities covered in each topic for Music are shown below:
Bollywood music; Christmas performance; bringing us together; music code-breaking; ostinatos and repetition.
Rugby anthems; Official World Cup song; Easter performance; creating own lyrics for MJS anthem; rainforest music; sounds of Africa – African drumming; performances.
